The Texas-born actress Camilla Carr, also known as cult film S.F. Brownrigg and CBS’ Designing Women, in the low-budget 1970s horror films Don’t Look in the Basement, Poor White Trash Part II and Keep My Grave Open also known as Scum of the Earth, and Keep My Grave Open (1977), died at 83 in El Paso. According to Hollywood reporter, her son, writer, poet and painter Caley O’Dwyer told the cause of her death is the complications related to Alzheimer’s disease and a dislocated hip. Her career bridged cult horror, television, and stage work, leaving an unforgettable mark on the entertainment industry.
On CBS’ Designing Women when she portrayed a Sugarbaker client who thinks gay men who contract AIDS are getting what they deserve in the October 1987 episode “They’re Killing All the Right People,” written by series creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason.
Carr’s film and television work also included Logan’s Run (1976), three episodes of Falcon Crest in 1988 as housekeeper Nellie Maxwell, appearances on One Day at a Time and Another World, and stage performances at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. One of her notable theatre roles was Maxine in a 1991 production of Tennessee Williams’ The Night of the Iguana.
Carr also wrote on telefilms and authored the comic 1989 novel Topsy Turvy Dingo Dog, which revolved around a B-movie actress, Mary Jane Shady, who returns to her hometown of Uncertain, Texas, for her 20th high school reunion.
One of Camilla Carr’s last known screen appearances was in Don’t Look in the Basement 2, the film was released in 2015, which was directed by Brownrigg’s son, Anthony Brownrigg.
Camilla Carr wife of Oscar-winning screenwriter Edward Anhalt she was one of his five wives. Their marriage lasted from 1968 until 1976. Edward Anhalt, known for Panic in the Streets and Becket.
