BNP to Press India for Sheikh Hasina’s Return After Death Sentence

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a two-thirds majority in the country’s recent elections, has announced that it will formally demand the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee and winner of the Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency, told reporters outside the party office in Dhaka that the BNP would “press for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition” in accordance with the law.

“This matter lies between the Foreign Ministries of Bangladesh and India. We will demand that the Indian government send her back to face the cases currently in court,” he stated.

It should be noted that Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 following a popular uprising against her government. In November 2025, a Dhaka court sentenced her to death in absentia for crimes against humanity.
