Viral Claims of Body Found in Pima County Resembling Nancy Guthrie Debunked

14 February, 2026 11:21

The search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, has intensified over the past two weeks, involving more than 100 officials from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. Amid this nationwide effort, a shocking claim recently went viral, suggesting that a body resembling Nancy had been discovered in Pima County.

Debunking the viral body report

A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit purportedly shows an unidentified female body matching Nancy Guthrie’s description, including the clothes she was reportedly wearing before her disappearance. The clip included the caption:

“Body found in Pima county search shares similarities with missing Nancy Guthrie, ID pending.”

However, investigations reveal that the video originated from an AI-generated clip posted by a non-credible account. Social media users quickly questioned its authenticity, with one writing, “This sounds like AI,” while another asked, “If it isn’t her, who’s this woman?” Authorities have confirmed that no body linked to Nancy Guthrie has been recovered.

Current investigation and primary suspects

On February 10, 2026, the FBI released new images and a 44-second doorbell camera video showing a masked suspect outside Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona. The footage depicts a man wearing gloves, a ski mask, and a holstered firearm, carrying a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack.” Authorities describe him as 5’9”–5’10” with an average build.

While social media speculation initially pointed toward Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, some have suggested that the masked individual resembles his friend and former Early Black bandmate, Dominic Evans. However, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos have not named any official suspects, emphasizing that the Guthrie family has been “100 per cent” cooperative with the investigation.

Where the case stands

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, when she was dropped off at her home. Since her disappearance, investigators have received over 13,000 tips, and a 24-hour command post remains active in the neighbourhood. DNA recovered from her property reportedly does not match Nancy or anyone close to her, and it is being analyzed for potential leads.

Ransom notes demanding millions in Bitcoin were reportedly sent to media outlets, though authorities have not confirmed their legitimacy. The reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return has been increased to USD 100,000.
