Financial Times: Iran, Russia Sign Secret €500M Missile Deal
The Financial Times said on Sunday that Iran and Russia had reached a covert military agreement worth 500 million euros ($589 million) for Iran to purchase thousands of sophisticated shoulder-fired missiles
According to the FT, which cited leaked Russian documents it saw and many persons familiar with the accord, the pact, which was signed in Moscow in December, commits Russia to delivering 2,500 “9M336” missiles and 500 man-portable “Verba” launch devices over a three-year period.
Reuters was unable to confirm the report right away.
According to the FT, the delivery are planned in three installments between 2027 and 2029.
According to the FT, the agreement was negotiated between the Moscow-based official of Iran’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) and Russian state arms dealer Rosoboronexport.
According to a contract reviewed by the FT, Tehran made an official request for the equipment last July. As part of Israel’s military assault against Iran, US soldiers attacked Iran’s three primary nuclear sites in June of last year.
According to President Donald Trump, the attack damaged Iran’s main nuclear facilities. But according to a preliminary US intelligence estimate at the time, Iran’s nuclear capacity was only delayed by a few months as a result of the US bombings.
Iranian leaders have stated time and time again that Tehran has recovered from the war’s damage and is now more capable than before.
Despite lacking a mutual defense clause, Russia and Iran have a strategic partnership treaty.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said this week that a Russian naval corvette engaged in maneuvers with the Iranian navy in the Gulf of Oman earlier in February.
