Global community urges restraint amid Pakistan-Afghanistan border tensions

27 February, 2026 13:52

Global powers have urged restraint as China, Russia, Iran, and the United Nations pressed Pakistan and Afghanistan to halt cross-border attacks and pursue diplomacy amid rising tensions immediately.

Pakistan responded strongly to what it called unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban regime. Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar confirmed on Friday that 133 militants were killed and over 200 injured.

The Pakistan security forces launched Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq after the Taliban’s unprovoked action along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border. Security sources said several key Taliban posts were destroyed, and the Afghan Taliban reportedly raised white flags at multiple positions following Pakistan’s decisive action.

China’s Reaction

China expressed deep concern over the escalation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Its foreign ministry said clashes followed retaliatory strikes by the Taliban on Pakistani installations. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing was mediating through its own channels and was willing to play a constructive role in calming the situation.

Russia’s Statement

Russia called on Afghanistan and Pakistan to immediately stop cross-border attacks and resolve differences through diplomacy. The Russian foreign ministry told RIA news agency that Moscow would consider offering mediation if both sides requested it, urging the two neighbors to cease attacks “immediately” and settle disputes via diplomatic channels.

Iran Offers to Help

Iran also offered to help “facilitate dialogue” between Afghanistan and Pakistan after tensions flared, according to AFP. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X that “The Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to provide any assistance necessary to facilitate dialogue and to enhance understanding and cooperation between the two countries.”

UN Response

In Geneva, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is closely monitoring the situation and is deeply concerned by the recent tensions, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. He stressed that both countries must strictly fulfill their obligations under international law and emphasized the urgent need to prioritize the protection of civilians.

The situation remains tense, and the international community continues to push for diplomacy to prevent further escalation.
