Iran Downs 11 US MQ-9 Reaper Drones Worth Over $330 Million
TEHRAN, 10 March 2026: Iran has reportedly shot down 11 American MQ-9 Reaper drones, causing losses estimated at more than $330 million, according to US military officials cited by CBS News.
The drones were destroyed during defensive operations as the conflict between Iran, United States, and Israel continues to escalate across the region.
Latest Drone Losses Confirmed
Reports indicate that the two most recent MQ-9 Reaper drones were shot down in the past few days, bringing the total number of American drones destroyed since the war began to 11.
The MQ-9 Reaper, developed by General Atomics, is widely used by the United States military for intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike missions.
Each drone is estimated to cost around $30 million, meaning the reported losses exceed $330 million.
Vulnerability in High-Threat Airspace
Defense analysts say the MQ-9 Reaper is designed mainly for operations in low-threat environments, where enemy air defenses are limited.
With a maximum speed of about 480 kilometers per hour, the drone is significantly slower than modern fighter aircraft, making it more vulnerable in heavily defended airspace.
Iran reportedly deployed layered air defense systems that were able to detect and engage the drones effectively.
Strategic Impact on the Conflict
Military observers say the loss of multiple high-value drones highlights the risks faced by US aerial surveillance platforms in the current conflict zone.
The destruction of these drones represents both a financial setback and an operational challenge for US forces conducting intelligence and surveillance missions over contested areas.
As tensions continue to rise, analysts warn that the conflict could further reshape air warfare strategies in the region.
