Karachi Board Plans Major Change in Exam Papers

16 March, 2026 08:40

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has announced an important reform in the examination system. The board plans to change the pattern of exam papers to promote conceptual learning instead of memorization.

The decision was discussed during a meeting held in Karachi with paper setters of key subjects including English, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The meeting was chaired by Ghulam Hussain Soho, Chairman of BSEK. Officials and teachers discussed ways to improve the quality of question papers and bring them closer to modern educational standards.

According to the board, future examination papers will focus more on understanding and analytical thinking instead of simple rote learning.

Education experts at the meeting said the new approach will help students develop stronger thinking skills and a deeper understanding of their subjects.

Participants agreed that exam papers should test students’ conceptual understanding, problem-solving ability, and analytical skills.

Instead of asking questions based only on memorized answers, the new papers will encourage students to explain ideas and apply their knowledge.

Officials also agreed on several steps to improve the exam system, including:

  • Balanced weightage of questions in papers

  • Clear and transparent marking schemes

  • Development of a question bank based on concepts

  • Better evaluation of students’ thinking ability

These changes aim to make examinations more meaningful and fair for students.

Chairman Ghulam Hussain Soho said teachers should design question papers that promote real learning.

He explained that when students focus on understanding concepts rather than memorizing answers, their intellectual growth improves.

He also noted that concept-based exam papers may help reduce cheating because students will need to understand the topic instead of relying on prepared answers.

The meeting also decided that the process of preparing exam papers will be carried out under direct supervision of the BSEK chairman and the controller of examinations.

Officials said this step will increase transparency and maintain the quality of exam papers.

Teachers who participate in preparing question papers will also receive travel allowances from the board.

The BSEK chairman said the board will continue to hold meetings with paper setters in the future.

Regular consultation will help improve the examination system and keep it aligned with modern educational methods.

Education officials believe these reforms will create a better learning environment for students and encourage them to focus on understanding their subjects.
