KP Introduces 4-Day School Week Under Austerity Drive from April 2026

Punjab Education Department considers reducing school holidays
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — The provincial government has introduced a four-day working week in public educational institutions as part of its austerity campaign, according to an official notification issued by the education department.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department confirmed that the new schedule will be implemented across the province, including Peshawar, starting from April 1, 2026. Under the revised system, Friday and Saturday will be observed as weekly holidays.
Officials stated that the decision has been taken in response to rising fuel prices and supply challenges, aiming to reduce operational costs while maintaining the efficiency of the education system.
According to the new timings, primary schools will operate from 7:30 AM to 1:35 PM, middle schools from 7:30 AM to 2:35 PM, while high and higher secondary schools will close at 3:00 PM.
Authorities believe that the revised schedule will not only help cut expenses but also improve overall management and performance within public sector schools.
The move comes as part of broader efforts to manage economic pressures while ensuring continuity in the education sector.
