Artemis II Astronauts Complete Historic Lunar Flyby, Begin Journey Back to Earth
NASA’s Artemis II mission has successfully completed a historic lunar flyby, sending humans farther into space than any crew in over 50 years. The four-member crew is now en route back to Earth following a record-breaking journey around the Moon.
The mission, led by NASA, represents a major milestone in deep space exploration since the Apollo era. During the flyby, the spacecraft traveled more than 252,000 miles from Earth, surpassing the distance achieved by Apollo 13.
The Artemis II astronauts — Americans Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen — conducted a seven-hour observation of the lunar surface, capturing high-resolution images of craters and geological features. They also witnessed rare celestial events, including a total solar eclipse, and observed planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Saturn.
Following a “free-return” trajectory, similar to the Apollo 13 mission, the crew ensured a safe journey home without additional propulsion adjustments. The spacecraft approached within just over 4,000 miles of the Moon, documenting key scientific targets such as impact basins and craters.
Emotional moments were part of the mission, including a tribute to Apollo astronaut Jim Lovell, whose recorded message was played during the flyby, and the carrying of an Apollo 8 historic patch, highlighting the continuity of lunar exploration efforts.
US President Donald Trump praised the Artemis II astronauts as “modern-day pioneers” for their contributions to space exploration. The mission provides critical data that will support upcoming lunar landings under NASA’s Artemis programme, including future expeditions to the Moon’s south pole.
The crew is expected to complete the nearly 10-day mission with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean later this week, marking a new chapter in human lunar exploration.
