Fresh Ethnic Violence Erupts in Manipur as Modi Spreads Extremism

A fresh wave of ethnic violence has erupted in India’s northeastern state of Manipur, with the Modi government facing renewed criticism over its failure to contain tensions and protect vulnerable communities. According to India’s Deccan Chronicle, armed attackers allegedly targeted a Naga village in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday night, opening fire before setting at least nine houses ablaze. The incident has heightened concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the state’s hill areas.
Local residents reportedly said that despite emergency appeals for assistance, nearby Central Reserve and state police forces failed to respond promptly to the attack. The reported delay has intensified concerns among communities already affected by prolonged ethnic conflict and displacement. The latest violence has raised fresh questions over the effectiveness of security arrangements and the authorities’ ability to prevent armed attacks against civilian communities.
The renewed clashes have also drawn criticism from international human rights organizations. Amnesty International has accused the BJP led government of failing to adequately protect human rights and prevent violence in Manipur. The continuing attacks, destruction of homes and insecurity among civilians demonstrate the persistence of deep ethnic divisions in the state, where violence has repeatedly disrupted normal life and displaced communities.
The latest developments have added to wider concerns over internal instability in India, particularly in regions affected by longstanding ethnic and political grievances. Critics argue that continued violence in Manipur reflects the failure of the authorities to develop an effective and inclusive political response to the crisis. Unless security concerns are addressed alongside the underlying grievances of affected communities, recurring violence could further deepen mistrust, displacement and instability in the region.
