Is Bitcoin Creator’s Identity Finally Revealed?
A major new investigation by The New York Times has identified Adam Back, a 55-year-old British cryptographer and CEO of Blockstream, as the strongest candidate to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the unknown creator of Bitcoin.
The 12,000-word report was written by journalist John Carreyrou, who is known for exposing the Theranos fraud. However, Back has denied the claim many times, both in the article and on social media.
The investigation mainly used language analysis. Experts studied writing styles from thousands of people in old cryptography mailing lists between 1992 and 2008. They compared these writings with Satoshi’s known texts, including the Bitcoin white paper, forum posts, and emails.
They looked at small writing habits like double spaces, spelling differences, and grammar mistakes such as confusion between “its” and “it’s.” After careful filtering, the number of possible suspects dropped from 34,000 to just one — Adam Back.
Language expert Florian Cafiero also found that Back’s writing was the closest match to Satoshi, although the result was not fully confirmed. Another expert, Robert Leonard, said such writing patterns act like “fingerprints.”
The report also highlighted other clues. Back created Hashcash in the 1990s, a system used in Bitcoin mining. His early online posts discussed ideas similar to how Bitcoin works today. He also became quiet online when Satoshi was active and started speaking about Bitcoin after Satoshi disappeared in 2011.
The investigation mentioned emails from 2008 between Back and Satoshi. These emails were shown during the Craig Wright fraud trial. The report suggested a possibility that Back sent those emails to himself, but no direct proof was given. Back has not shared full details of those emails.
In an interview in 2026, Back again denied being Satoshi. He said on X:
“I’m not satoshi, but I was early in laser focus on the positive societal implications of cryptography, online privacy and electronic cash.”
He also added:
He described the linguistic overlap as “a combination of coincidence and similar phrases from people with similar experience and interests.” Blockstream also said the report is based on speculation, not solid proof.
Many people in the crypto community disagreed with the findings. Jameson Lopp said Satoshi cannot be identified through writing style. Alex Thorn called it another failed attempt to solve the mystery.
Early Bitcoin user Nicholas Gregory warned that naming someone as Satoshi could be dangerous for them and their family.
The report also gave little attention to other suspects like Nick Szabo. Another name, Peter Todd, had earlier been suggested in a 2024 documentary, but he provided proof that he was not involved. Other suspects like Hal Finney and Len Sassaman have passed away.
Experts believe Satoshi owns about 1.1 million Bitcoin, worth around $71 billion, making them one of the richest people in the world.
Even after 17 years, the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown.
