Susan Coyle Appointed First Female Chief of Australian Army in 125 Years
The Australian government has made history by appointing Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the first female Chief of the Australian Army in its 125-year history. The appointment will take effect in July 2026 and marks a major milestone for the country’s military leadership.
Coyle’s rise to the top position reflects a long and distinguished career in the Australian Defence Force. She enlisted as a soldier in the Army Reserves in 1987 and has since served in key tactical, operational, and strategic roles. Over the years, she has held several major command positions including Head of Information Warfare, Commander Forces Command, Commander Joint Task Force 633, Commander 6th Brigade, Commander Task Group Afghanistan, and Commanding Officer of the 17th Signal Regiment.
Her appointment also makes her the first woman to lead the Australian Army, breaking a long-standing barrier in the institution’s history. Defence officials say her leadership experience and operational background played a key role in her selection.
The Australian government also paid tribute to outgoing Chief of Army Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, acknowledging his leadership and service. He is credited with guiding the army through important reforms linked to the 2024 National Defence Strategy and is noted as the first Chief of Army to have begun his career as an enlisted soldier.
The government said a new Chief of Joint Capabilities will be announced at a later date as part of routine military leadership transitions.
Personal Life Note
There is no publicly verified or officially reported information available about Lieutenant General Susan Coyle’s husband or marital details in the current government release or defence records referenced in this announcement.
