Scottish Ex-Drug Dealer Turned Prison Rockstar Allan McCarthy’s Viral Story Secures Fast-Moving Film Deal

A 62-year-old Scottish man has gone from drug dealer to prison-based rock musician, with his extraordinary life story now being adapted into a film after going viral online. Allan McCarthy, from Barrhead near Glasgow, first came into public attention in the 1990s while serving a sentence at the Sangonera de la Verde prison in Murcia, Spain.

He was jailed in 1988 for 6.5 years due to cannabis possession, but his time in prison took an unexpected turn when he discovered music. Inside the prison, McCarthy and fellow inmates formed a band called Berlin90, which was initially part of a rehabilitation initiative.

Their song Runaway, written by McCarthy while incarcerated, went on to win a national music competition. The success led to the group being taken to a recording studio under heavy police escort, attracting major media attention and public crowds.

The band later appeared on television and radio, earning the nickname “Jailhouse Rock” and “The Bad Boys of Rock” due to their unusual rise from prison life to music recognition.

Decades later, McCarthy revived interest in his story by sharing it online just weeks ago while seeking support for a creative project. This led to a rapid response from film director David Zucker, who contacted him after seeing the post.

What began as a simple interview quickly developed into a full documentary project. Filming began within weeks in Glasgow at a local Italian restaurant, followed by additional scenes shot in Edinburgh.

The fast development of the project has surprised those involved, with plans now aiming for a spring film festival release. McCarthy described the experience by saying, “It’s a complete dream and a few weeks ago I wouldn’t have believed it.”

Alongside the film project, his story has gained traction on social media, attracting increasing engagement. Early discussions with a record label have also opened new music possibilities.

Beyond fame, McCarthy highlights his personal transformation, having been in recovery from drugs and alcohol for two years. He stated that sharing his story helps support his recovery and may inspire others facing similar struggles, adding, “Now I can help people get clean by sharing my story” and “I’ve gotten a second chance.”
