Pakistan gets crucial LNG cargo amid global energy crunch

01 May, 2026 16:28

After a gap of almost two months, Pakistan’s energy sector has received some relief as a new LNG shipment has arrived and started supplying gas to the national system.

The LNG carrier Seapeak Magellan docked at the Pakistan GasPort terminal on Thursday morning. The ship brought around 140,000 cubic metres of liquefied natural gas (LNG). After arrival, it began supplying re-gasified LNG (RLNG) into the country’s gas network.

The shipment was arranged by TotalEnergies at a price of $18.40 per mmbtu. This is the first LNG cargo to reach Pakistan in several weeks.

Initially, gas flow started at a low level of 50 MMcf, then gradually increased to 250 MMcf and later 260 MMcf as supply conditions improved. Out of this supply, 45 MMcf is being provided to K-Electric, while the rest is going into the system of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.

Officials say the arrival has brought temporary relief to the power sector. At present, there is no load shedding, and the situation is stable due to better gas management and supply.

However, the future supply situation is still uncertain. Authorities are trying to arrange another LNG shipment expected between May 10 and 12. A decision is also pending on whether it will be purchased through open bidding or from SOCAR.

Pakistan is also working to secure four LNG cargoes stuck due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Government officials are holding talks at high levels to resolve the issue.

Despite challenges, the recent movement of fuel shipments through the region has raised hopes that more LNG cargoes may arrive soon, helping improve Pakistan’s energy situation.
