US Military Access to Australian Facilities Sparks Debate Over Sovereignty

The United States reportedly controls or has access to 110 Australian military facilities, according to data cited by The Guardian from the Nautilus Institute. The database indicates that the US military directly controls 17 facilities on mainland Australia, has access to another 75 Australian-operated installations, while US defense companies have access to 18 additional sites. Professor Richard Tanter, who compiled the database, described the scale of American involvement as one of “saturation,” noting that more than half of the defense facilities examined have some level of US military or corporate presence.

The American military presence extends beyond conventional basing arrangements to intelligence gathering, satellite-data access, communications interception, marine rotations and the pre-positioning of weapons, ammunition, fuel and other military equipment for a potential regional conflict. Under the AUKUS security partnership, the US military presence is also expected to expand, with up to 1,200 US personnel reportedly scheduled to operate from HMAS Stirling near Fremantle through a rotational arrangement. Critics argue that although Canberra does not formally classify the facility as a US base, the arrangement could effectively provide Washington with a strategic submarine foothold in the Indian Ocean.

Australian critics have described the growing US military footprint as a form of “voluntary subordination” or a “second wave of colonization.” Dr Vince Scappatura, author of The US Lobby and Australian Defense Policy, argues that extensive American access gives Washington additional leverage over Australian defense and foreign-policy decisions. Supporters of the alliance, however, view the expanded cooperation as an important component of Australia’s security strategy. The developments form part of Washington’s broader effort to strengthen military partnerships across the Indo-Pacific amid intensifying strategic competition with China.
