Iran Warns Sanctions and Blockade Are Disrupting Access to Life-Saving Medicines

Iran’s High Council for Human Rights has urged the international community to take immediate measures to remove barriers to medicine supplies, warning that economic sanctions and restrictions are undermining access to essential healthcare, particularly for vulnerable patients. In a statement issued on Monday, the council expressed serious concern over the humanitarian consequences of economic and maritime blockades, especially following the recent war against Iran.
The council said that disruptions to medicine supply chains, restrictions on raw materials and medical equipment, rising treatment costs, and difficulties obtaining essential drugs had raised serious human rights concerns. It highlighted growing shortages and sharp price increases affecting patients with cancer, thalassemia, hemophilia, multiple sclerosis, treatment-resistant epilepsy, rare diseases, and other chronic conditions. The council warned that delayed or interrupted treatment could cause irreversible complications, deteriorating health, and life-threatening consequences.
Calling for urgent international action, the council urged the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the UN human rights office, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and relevant international bodies to investigate the humanitarian impact of sanctions and economic restrictions against Iran. It also called for secure financial and banking channels for humanitarian transactions and the uninterrupted delivery of medicines, medical equipment, and raw materials, stressing that no patient should be denied life-saving treatment because of their nationality, residence, or political disputes beyond their control.
