Putin Proposes Trilateral Talks with Trump and Xi Jinping on Ukraine Peace Deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding trilateral talks with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss a potential peace deal to end the Ukraine conflict, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing sources familiar with the matter. The proposal was reportedly raised during a telephone conversation between Putin and Trump on October 9, with the Kremlin suggesting that the meeting could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 18–19 in Shenzhen, China.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that such a meeting was a possibility but said no clear understanding had emerged regarding its timing or agenda. Neither the White House nor Xi Jinping’s office had publicly confirmed the proposal, while a senior US official told the newspaper that Trump had not agreed to the summit but could be receptive to the idea. The proposal comes amid reported signs of improving Washington-Moscow relations, including a diesel deal and developments concerning sanctions against Russia.
Responding to the prospect of a trilateral meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the priority should be ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that Trump wanted the conflict to end, warning that it offered no benefits and carried significant risks, including further escalation and the potential spread of hostilities. The proposed summit remains uncertain as diplomatic efforts continue over a possible settlement to the conflict.
