Iran Warns UN Against US-Bahrain Strait of Hormuz Resolution, Calls Proposal ‘Dangerous’

08 May, 2026 12:25

Iran has strongly opposed a draft resolution introduced by the United States and Bahrain concerning the Strait of Hormuz, warning the United Nations that the proposal could further escalate tensions in the Middle East.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and members of the UN Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi argued that the resolution unfairly targets Iran while ignoring what Tehran describes as the real source of the crisis — the military actions of the United States and Israel against Iran since February 28.

Araghchi stated that “the main cause of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz” is the “military aggression and unlawful use of force by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

He further wrote, “The current situation is directly and exclusively the result of their aggressive, unjustified, and unlawful war.”

According to the Iranian foreign minister, the proposed resolution seeks “to distort the facts on the ground and justify past and ongoing unlawful actions by the United States against Iran in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.”

Araghchi warned that the international community should not allow the Security Council to become “a tool for legitimizing” unlawful military actions. He also cautioned that passing the resolution would damage the credibility of the Security Council and establish a “dangerous precedent” regarding unilateral actions by powerful states.

Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, echoed these concerns during remarks outside the Security Council. He said the proposal presents a “selective and distorted narrative” and fails to address the underlying causes of the conflict.

Iravani accused the United States of violating the April 8 ceasefire through maritime blockades and attacks on Iranian vessels. He argued that the draft resolution falsely accuses Iran while overlooking US actions in the region.

The Iranian envoy also rejected the use of Chapter VII of the UN Charter in the draft, saying the measure was politically motivated and could pave the way for further military escalation.

Iran has stated that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could return to normal if military operations end permanently and sanctions against Tehran are lifted.

Meanwhile, Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya criticized the proposal, calling it an “unbalanced and confrontational attempt” to isolate Iran while ignoring the broader causes of the regional crisis.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, with rising geopolitical tensions continuing to impact regional security and global energy markets.
