Iran Warns US Over Naval Operations Near Strait of Hormuz, Cites Self-Defense Rights and Ceasefire Violations
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has reaffirmed that the Islamic Republic retains its “inherent right” to self-defense and to implement necessary protective measures in response to what it describes as hostile US naval activities in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
In a formal letter sent on Friday to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani detailed recent incidents involving American military forces. He cited alleged aggressive operations targeting two Iranian oil tankers near the port of Jask and the Strait of Hormuz, along with reported strikes on coastal areas of Iran bordering the strategic waterway.
“These aggressive and provocative acts, which the president of the United States has openly acknowledged, constitute a clear violation of the April 8, 2026 ceasefire and a blatant breach of Article 2(4) of the Charter of the United Nations,” the envoy stated.
He referred to the ceasefire announced by Donald Trump following 40 days of hostilities and accused Washington of continuing restrictive actions against Iranian maritime operations despite the agreement. Iran further claims that these measures include an ongoing blockade of vessels and ports.
Warning of escalation, Iravani stressed the possibility of “‘Catastrophic consequences'” if such actions continue, arguing that the impact could extend beyond the region and threaten global peace and stability, with full responsibility placed on the United States.
He also strongly criticized the seizure of Iranian commercial vessels, stating: “Such unlawful acts amount to piracy and violate the international law and the UN Charter,” and described the broader conduct as incompatible with international responsibilities.
“Such conduct is wholly incompatible with the responsibilities of a permanent member of the Security Council that claims commitment to freedom of navigation. Rather than safeguarding maritime security, these actions undermine it and violate the fundamental principles of the international law.”
Iran further accused the United States of favoring coercion over diplomatic engagement, urging restraint and dialogue instead of escalation.
The Iranian envoy called on the United Nations to formally condemn the actions and demand that the United States comply with international law and cease further provocative operations.
