CIA Says Iran Can Withstand US Blockade for Several Months

A newly disclosed intelligence assessment by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) indicates that Iran can endure the effects of the US blockade for several months while continuing to maintain a large portion of its missile and drone arsenal.

According to a report published by The Washington Post, the classified CIA analysis suggests that Tehran’s economic and military position remains stronger than previously believed. The report reportedly challenges statements made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed Iran urgently needed an end to the conflict due to mounting economic and military pressure.

Sources familiar with the confidential assessment said the report was presented to officials within the Trump administration earlier this week. The intelligence findings reportedly show that Iran has taken strategic steps to reduce the impact of sanctions and restrictions on its oil exports.

Officials cited in the report stated that Iran has stored portions of its oil reserves aboard tanker ships used as floating storage facilities while also reducing extraction flows to preserve oil well operations. One source explained, “It is nowhere near as dire as some have claimed,” referring to Iran’s current economic condition.

The report further noted that Iran has continued oil sales through overland transportation networks, including trucks and rail systems. Officials believe Tehran may also expand oil shipments through Central Asia using railway routes to maintain economic stability.

CIA analysts estimate that Iran could withstand the blockade for approximately 90 to 120 days, or potentially longer, before facing serious economic difficulties. The findings support previous international market assessments suggesting that substantial volumes of Iranian crude oil remain available for export, particularly to China.

The intelligence review also revealed that Tehran still possesses around 75% of its mobile missile launchers and nearly 70% of its prewar missile and drone stockpiles. These figures contradict earlier claims that Iran’s military resources had been significantly depleted.

The conflict intensified following US-Israeli military strikes on Iran on February 28, which reportedly targeted senior Iranian officials and military commanders. Iran later responded with missile and drone operations aimed at Israeli-controlled territories and US military assets in the region.

Iran also reacted by restricting access through the Strait of Hormuz, triggering major disruptions in global oil markets and causing a rise in energy prices worldwide.

A temporary ceasefire brokered by Pakistan came into effect on April 8 after weeks of escalating conflict. Although negotiations later took place in Islamabad, no final agreement was reached due to disagreements over US demands and sanctions.

Iranian officials have since maintained that Tehran will not resume negotiations unless the United States removes what it describes as an illegal blockade on Iranian ports and vessels. Tehran has also stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain restricted while sanctions and blockades continue.
