Pakistan’s new design currency notes likely to face delay

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jamil Ahmed has said that the launch of new currency note designs in Pakistan may face a delay.

He said the designs of the new banknotes were sent to the government for approval, but the government returned them to the State Bank for some changes and improvements. The SBP is now working on updating the designs, while the final approval will be given by the federal cabinet.

Earlier, while speaking to traders at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce, Jamil Ahmed said that Pakistan’s economic situation has improved compared to three years ago, although several challenges still remain. He added that the ongoing Middle East conflict is also creating economic pressure.

The SBP governor said that the opening of letters of credit has improved in 2026 compared to 2023. He shared that Pakistan’s average monthly imports are now above $5 billion, while three years ago they were around $3 billion per month.
