Government releases advisory on QR code verification in electricity bills
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Energy’s Power Division has issued an important advisory for electricity consumers about the new QR code verification system on electricity bills.
According to officials, cybercriminals are trying to misuse this system by tricking people in the name of a government subsidy scheme. The spokesperson warned that some fake actors are using QR codes to steal personal information from consumers.
The Power Division said that people are being asked to click on suspicious links and complete a “four-step process”. After entering their details, they are also being asked to submit a “six-digit code” on the same link.
Authorities clearly stated that this method is illegal and fraudulent. Consumers have been advised not to enter their personal information on any website or platform other than the official system linked with their electricity bill.
Law enforcement agencies have already been informed about this scam, the spokesperson added.
Consumers are strongly advised to avoid sharing data on any unofficial platform claiming subsidy registration.
QR Code Registration for Subsidy
The federal government has introduced a new system for electricity subsidy verification. Under this system, subsidised consumers must register through a QR code printed on their monthly electricity bills to continue receiving relief.
The Power Division said consumers should scan the QR code on their bill and complete registration only through the official online portal.
Officials explained that the purpose of this system is to make sure subsidies are delivered in a transparent way to deserving and low-income households.
Clarifying confusion, the Power Division said the new process does not mean that subsidies are being removed.
“This registration process is only intended to ensure that relief reaches poor and low-electricity-consuming households,” the spokesperson said.
“It should be noted that this does not mean the elimination of subsidies in any way.”
