White House Security Foils Attack Attempt, Suspect Shot Dead
Washington: A shooting incident occurred near the White House after a gunman attacked officers at a checkpoint but the Secret Service responded quickly and neutralized the attacker.
The incident happened at around 6 pm local time when a man targeted a security checkpoint at the entrance of the White House As per US media reports
Identity of the suspect was not immediately disclosed, but initial reports claim that he was suffering from mental stress, officials reprted.
Two people sustained gunshot wounds in the Secret Service’s response, and a bystander was also hurt. Authorities said all security personnel remained unharmed.
After the incident, the White House was held under lockdown, with roads stuck down and gunmen positioned on the building’s roof. Media people on the North Lawn were ordered to directly shift to the press briefing room.
Eyewitnesses said, about 30 gunshots were heard at intervals. While journalists from different TV channels were broadcasting live, the gunfire was also recorded in real time on their cameras.
US media say that President Donald was present at the White House at the time of the incident, but there has been no official confirmation in this regard.
According to reports, President Trump was supposed to leave for the Bahamas today to attend his son’s wedding ceremony, but due to a possible agreement with Iran, he preferred to stay in Washington.
The incident comes just a month after an armed man attempted to enter the White House during the annual press dinner, but was thwarted by security officials.
President Trump, who was present at the event, was later moved to a safe location within his compound by emergency security personnel.
