Imtiaz Ali defends his comments on Deepika Padukone amid criticism

Social media backlash prompted Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali to clarified his recent statements regarding Deepika Padukone and her performance in Cocktail.

Taking to Instagram Stories, filmmaker reposted a viral segment from his interview with News18 Showsha where he discussed why he considered the Padmaavat actor perfect for the role of Veronica in the 2012 movie.

During interview, he revealed that, at first Deepika consider for Meera’s role, later played by Diana Penty, though he believed she fit Veronica perfectly, as the role allowed her to showcase a side of herself previously unseen on screen.

He had said, adding that at the time she carried a “good girl” image, but he also said, ‘since I had been in the room and attended parties with her, I know how crazy and wild she can be.’

As per his remarks, the filmmaker said that Deepika Padukone misinterpreted his fun comment about Cocktail character, so he clears air after his remarks about Deepika sparks gossip.

As his remarks made him to face massive criticizing when his comments roaming rapidly across social media, that the filmmaker try to ‘façade’ Deepika’s public image.

And for clarification, the Cocktail director share a long note on his Instagram.

This is what he penned, “My dearest and loveliest Deepika Padukone, you are my pal, my buddy, my safe option for humour.”

He further added, “I think you will never misunderstand my wannabe fun remarks because you more than anyone else know how much I love you, admire you, understand you, appreciate you…but I have been told you might misunderstand and be hurt so I am telling you pl don’t…”

The filmmaker also expresses his shocking reaction that he would never thing that this kind of statement would become and issue and public take it wrongly, he did not want his words to be misunderstood.

“To be mean to you is Janam mein to possible Nahin hai… I never thought I would write such a disclaimer to you but it’s been a while and didn’t want to take a chance. Wish you the best best and love always.”

Cocktail, starring Deepika, Diana Penty and Saif Ali Khan, was directed by Homi Adajania and remains one of Deepika’s most talked-about performances.
