NADRA makes CNIC process easier with optional signature rule
NADRA has updated its rules for issuing Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) in Pakistan, aiming to make the process simpler and more secure.
Under the new rules, providing a signature is now optional for people applying for a CNIC for the first time. If an applicant does not provide a signature, the system will automatically enter “NA” in the signature field.
However, NADRA has clarified that thumb impressions or any other marks will not replace a signature on the CNIC. Thumbprint images will also not be printed on identity cards due to concerns about misuse and forgery.
The authority has also advised users not to upload thumbprint images when using its mobile application, as part of efforts to prevent identity fraud.
In addition, NADRA has launched an awareness campaign to help people who are illiterate or unable to sign. The campaign will guide citizens on how to properly complete their CNIC applications under the new system.
Officials said these changes are meant to improve transparency and make the registration process easier for citizens across the country.
NADRA also clarified that any changes to a signature on an existing CNIC will not be made automatically. Applicants will need to submit a formal correction request if they want to update their details.
These steps are intended to keep national identity records accurate, secure, and properly verified.
