Iran Denies President Pezeshkian Resignation Reports, Calls Them 'False' and 'Media Games'
Iran’s government moved swiftly on Sunday to deny circulating reports claiming that President Masoud Pezeshkian had submitted a formal letter of resignation to the Office of the Supreme Leader, dismissing the claims as entirely without basis.
The reports, initially cited by Iran International, alleged that Pezeshkian had tendered his resignation through an official communication to the Supreme Leader’s office. However, Presidential Office Deputy Head of Communications Mehdi Tabatabaei took to X to categorically reject the story.
Tabatabaei labelled the resignation reports as “false,” characterising them as a continuation of “media games” orchestrated by certain foreign media outlets seeking to sow division within Iran.
“Pezeshkian would not back down from serving the Iranian people,” he stated, adding that Iran “would not retreat from the path of unity and solidarity.”
He further warned that those attempting to fracture Iran’s national cohesion would once again “take that wish to the grave,” firmly dismissing any speculation about internal political divisions within the country.
The denial comes against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli military strikes against Iran in late February, which triggered retaliatory Iranian attacks targeting Israeli positions and US allies in the Gulf, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire entered into force on April 8, though subsequent rounds of negotiations in Islamabad failed to yield a durable agreement.
