The United States and Iran could sign a peace deal as early as this weekend, which may reopen the Strait of Hormuz for shipping said by US President Donald Trump on Thursday.
Iran, however, said it is still yet to reach a final decision. According to Iranian officials many parts of the agreement have been finalized important issues are yet to be cleared by top authorities, and Iran insists it will not back down on its core demands.
Trump told reporters at the White House that a “major deal” has already been reached to end the war. He said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen once the agreement is signed, possibly very soon, and suggested the signing could happen over the weekend in Europe. He also claimed Iran’s leadership had approved the deal.
Iranian media, however, noted that official saying negotiations are still in progress and no agreement has been reached yet.
The statement was made after Trump canceled previously planned military strikes against Iran, stating that negotiations were moving ahead. The news led to a rise in US stocks and a fall in oil prices.
Trump has long said any deal must stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while Iran insists it is not seeking them. Iran is also demanding sanctions relief, access to frozen funds, and recognition of its rights over the Strait of Hormuz.
