Electricity Bills in Karachi and Pakistan May Rise by 82 Paisa Per Unit
Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including those in Karachi and other major urban centres, could soon see a rise in their electricity bills of up to 82 paisa per unit. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism for May 2026.
NEPRA is scheduled to take up the matter on June 30. Should the regulator approve the proposal, electricity consumers nationwide could collectively face an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 12 billion on their monthly bills.
According to CPPA’s submission, a total of 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated during May 2026. The actual average fuel cost recorded for the month came in at Rs 9.25 per unit, exceeding the reference estimate of Rs 8.43 per unit — a gap that forms the basis of the current adjustment request.
The generation mix for May showed that hydropower led all energy sources with a 33.27 percent share of total output. Nuclear energy followed at 14.25 percent, with imported coal contributing 13.54 percent and local coal at 11.66 percent. Imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) accounted for 11.81 percent, while local gas contributed 8.31 percent. Furnace oil played a negligible role, making up just 0.16 percent of total electricity generation during the month.
NEPRA will deliver its final ruling on the proposed revision following its review of CPPA’s petition at the upcoming hearing. If the adjustment is endorsed, it will take direct effect on monthly electricity bills for consumers across the country.
