Switzerland confirms cancellation of planned US-Iran talks

19 June, 2026 11:54

Talks that were planned between the United States and Iran in Switzerland on Friday will no longer take place, according to a statement from Switzerland’s foreign ministry.

The meeting was expected to be held at the Burgenstock resort and was meant to begin discussions on how to implement the agreement recently reached between Washington and Tehran to end their war.

The announcement came after the White House confirmed that U.S. Vice President JD Vance had canceled his planned trip to Switzerland. He was expected to meet Iranian negotiators and start technical discussions on the 14-point peace agreement signed by both countries.

Earlier this week, U.S. officials said a formal signing ceremony for the agreement would be held in Geneva. However, Iran’s foreign ministry questioned the need for such an event, saying both countries’ presidents had already signed the agreement on Wednesday.

Iran had previously expressed readiness to begin technical talks after both sides agreed to extend their fragile ceasefire for at least 60 days. However, Iranian media later reported that Tehran wanted to see practical steps from the United States before taking part in further negotiations. There was also no confirmation that Iran’s delegation would travel to Geneva.

The White House said the U.S. delegation was prepared to travel once plans for the talks were finalized, but noted that negotiations have been complicated and unpredictable.

The delay has added to uncertainty about whether a long-term peace agreement can be achieved. The conflict has already killed more than 7,000 people, pushed energy prices higher, and created concerns in global financial markets.
