Smotrich Signals Long-Term Israeli Military Presence in Lebanon

Bezalel Smotrich has said Israeli forces will remain in Lebanon for the foreseeable future, insisting that any withdrawal is contingent on the disarmament of the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah. In an interview published over the weekend, Smotrich indicated that Israel’s military presence could continue for years, emphasizing that the government is committed to maintaining its current security posture.
When asked whether Israel should establish military posts and bases inside Lebanon, Smotrich responded affirmatively, saying that all necessary measures should be considered. He stated that neither he nor the Israeli leadership intends to move “a millimeter” until Hezbollah is disarmed, describing the position as shared by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s defense leadership.
Smotrich also asserted that Israel would not withdraw from Lebanon even if the United States were to demand such a move. However, he added that he does not expect Washington to make such a request, claiming that American officials understand Israel’s “red lines.” His remarks come amid ongoing regional tensions and continued debate over the future of security arrangements along the Israel-Lebanon border.
