Vance Says US, Iran to Work Together for Peace
The United States and Iran are now positioned to work together towards a future built on peace and prosperity, according to US Vice President JD Vance, as technical-level talks got underway between the two countries in Switzerland on Sunday.
Vance said both nations now see a path where cooperation is possible, with the goal of advancing peace and prosperity. He noted that President Donald Trump had called for relations with Iran to “turn over a new leaf.”
Even as negotiations continued, Vance also accused Iran of contributing to regional instability, though he acknowledged that “great” progress had been made in recent hours.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked US President Donald Trump for what he called “visionary and very dynamic leadership” in bringing about the meeting, adding that the talks were expected to deliver “very productive results” going forward.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani also praised both the US and Iranian delegations for engaging in the peace process. He described the talks as historic for regional security, global stability and the world economy, and said Qatar would remain committed to supporting mediation until a resolution is reached.
Talks Begin Under MoU Framework
The negotiations opened at the BĂĽrgenstock resort in Switzerland on Sunday under a memorandum of understanding, with Pakistan and Qatar mediating the process, according to a statement issued by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement said specialised technical and expert groups had been set up to review every provision of the proposed agreement, while follow-up committees would monitor progress on implementation.
Qatar’s Adviser to the Prime Minister and Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Dr Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, said Pakistan and other parties would continue working to maintain a constructive atmosphere for dialogue, while also recognising Pakistan’s mediating role and the commitment shown by both the US and Iran to diplomatic engagement.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said a joint meeting involving the US, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar was scheduled alongside broader discussions, including matters related to ceasefire efforts in Lebanon.
Qatar reaffirmed its support for a comprehensive agreement aimed at securing lasting peace, stability and prosperity across the region.
