‘Lies and endless wars must stop’; US Democrats denounce Trump’s renewed war on Iran as unconstitutional

Iran Retaliatory Missile and Drone Operations Leave Trump Bewildered
Democratic Congressional leaders sharply criticized President Donald Trump Monday after his formal notification to Congress that renewed military hostilities with Iran have resumed, arguing the declaration violates constitutional war powers limitations and contradicts previous ceasefire announcements.
The Democratic opposition centers on Trump’s assertion of unilateral authority to restart military operations without congressional authorization—a constitutional question that divides Republican and Democratic lawmakers regarding presidential war powers scope.
Constitutional Challenge:
Representative Mike Levin (D-California) asserted that “No president has the right to claim absolute and exclusive authority over war,” calling for bipartisan opposition to unilateral military decisions. Levin characterized Trump’s notification as evidence of bypassing constitutional limitations designed to vest war authority in Congress rather than presidential discretion.
Representative Teresa Leger Fernández (D-New Mexico) condemned Trump’s approach as legally circumventing requirements through strategic announcement timing. “The president cannot declare a war over on paper merely to avoid legal restrictions and then restart it whenever he chooses,” Fernández stated, emphasizing the inconsistency between previous ceasefire claims and current war notification.
Congressional War Powers Resolution:
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer referenced a War Powers Resolution passed by both House and Senate in June, which explicitly instructed the president to withdraw forces from Iran-related military conflicts. Schumer’s public statement emphasized: “Trump must comply with votes passed by both the House and Senate to remove our forces from harm’s way and end this war now.”
Schumer mocked the notification’s apparent surprise to legislators, saying: “President Trump formally notified lawmakers that the nation is once again at war with Iran. Really? Thanks Donald, nobody seemed to know that, did they?”
Criticism of Strategy:
Schumer characterized Trump’s approach as strategically incoherent, stating: “Donald Trump’s rinse-and-repeat approach to the Iran War isn’t a strategy – it’s a recipe for utter disaster. We keep moving backwards. Gas prices stay high, casualties increase, costs increase.”
Cease-Fire Collapse Context:
Senator Adam Schiff (D-California) noted the rapid collapse of diplomatic arrangements, posting: “We were promised the war would be over for months. And now in a matter of days we’ve gone from a bad US-Iran deal to more strikes, another blockade, and added turmoil.”
Representative Joe Morelle (D-New York) characterized recent military operations as “another escalation” in what he termed Trump’s “unauthorized war.”
Constitutional Authority Question:
Democratic arguments center on the constitutional requirement that Congress, not the president, possesses authority to declare war. The War Powers Resolution represents congressional exercise of this constitutional authority—a legislative action Democrats argue Trump must respect despite disagreement.
