Iran Condemns UK’s Designation of IRGC as National Security Threat

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the British government’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a threat under the United Kingdom’s National Security Act, calling the move “unjustified and irresponsible.” In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the decision violated fundamental principles of international law, including the sovereign equality of states and the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

The ministry stressed that the IRGC is an official branch of Iran’s Armed Forces, tasked alongside the regular army with protecting the country’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and national security. It also defended the force’s regional activities, saying the IRGC had played a significant role in promoting regional security and combating the Daesh militant group.

Describing Britain’s decision as “a disgraceful and provocative act,” Tehran argued that applying such a designation to an official institution of a sovereign state contravenes international law and the United Nations Charter. The statement reaffirmed Iran’s rejection of the measure and accused the UK of taking a politically motivated step that undermines established international legal norms.
