England Begins Search for New Test Coach Following McCullum’s Exit

14 July, 2026 17:40

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has begun the search for a new Test head coach following the dismissal of Brendon McCullum, with chief executive Richard Gould saying the shortlist will likely include between six and 10 candidates from around the world. The ECB hopes to appoint a successor before England’s Test series against Pakistan national cricket team, which begins at Headingley on 19 August.

McCullum, 44, was removed from the role after England suffered seven defeats in their last nine Test matches. The team is also searching for a new captain following Ben Stokes retirement from Test cricket during the recent series loss to New Zealand, leaving two key leadership positions vacant ahead of the Pakistan series.

Speaking to media, Gould said the selection process would be targeted and based on a succession plan already in place. He added that managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key will lead discussions with candidates. Gould also confirmed that appointing the new head coach is the priority, with the successful candidate expected to work alongside Key and national selector Marcus North in choosing England’s next Test captain.
