Iran Guards Say Strait of Hormuz Will Stay Closed Until US Ends Attacks
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States stops its “acts of aggression.” They also warned that other oil and gas export routes in the region could become targets.
Fighting between the United States and Iran, which started in late February, has disrupted energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil and gas shipments.
According to Iranian state television IRIB, the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said they attacked US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait after American strikes on Iranian territory.
The IRGC said the US should expect the closure of other oil and gas export routes that serve the interests of the United States and its allies. However, it did not say which routes could be affected.
The Guards added, “Oil and gas exports from the region will either be available for everyone or for no one.”
In another statement, the IRGC said, “The retaliatory operations of the fighters will continue, and the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States ends its acts of aggression.”
US officials have rejected Iran’s claims that it can control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and have said that international shipping routes will remain open.
