UN Fears More Than 500 Rohingya Dead in Suspected Myanmar Shipwrecks

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the possible deaths of more than 500 Rohingya Muslims following two suspected boat disasters off the coast of Myanmar, in what could become one of the deadliest maritime tragedies involving the persecuted minority in recent years. In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said two vessels carrying more than 500 people may have capsized after departing Myanmar in late June.

According to preliminary information, one boat carrying around 250 Rohingya passengers lost contact shortly after setting sail, while a second vessel, reportedly carrying about 280 people, is believed to have sunk off Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. The UN agencies said the incidents and casualty figures have not yet been officially confirmed but warned of the potentially devastating loss of life.

UNHCR and the IOM called for intensified search and rescue operations, greater access to asylum and protection for Rohingya refugees, and stronger action against human smuggling and trafficking networks. The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar, have for years undertaken dangerous sea journeys to escape violence, discrimination, and severe restrictions on their rights.
