Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz Expected to Grow in Global Strategic Importance

The Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz are expected to become even more significant to global energy markets, trade, and international security over the next two decades, according to strategic assessments. The Strait of Hormuz, which is about 24 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point, remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling roughly 20 percent of global crude oil shipments and a substantial share of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
Analysts say the waterway’s importance is likely to increase as Asian energy demand continues to grow and geopolitical competition intensifies. The strategic value of the Persian Gulf is also expected to rise amid evolving global trade patterns and an increasingly complex international security environment.
Within this context, Iran, as one of the two littoral states bordering the Strait of Hormuz alongside Oman, maintains that it has a legitimate and important role in safeguarding maritime security and ensuring the safe and orderly passage of international shipping through the vital waterway.
