Modi Government Launches Fresh Crackdown on Kashmiris

India’s Modi government has launched another crackdown in occupied Kashmir, following the killing of a police officer in Anantnag district. Thousands of Kashmiris have reportedly been detained, while homes have also been demolished.

According to the International Business Times, the crackdown has intensified political tensions in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir Media Service reported that Indian forces demolished two residential houses and arrested around 3,500 Kashmiris during widespread raids. Turkish news agency TRT also reported the detention of thousands of Kashmiris.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed anger over the arrests, saying a similar situation was seen after the Pahalgam attack. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called the arrests and demolitions “collective punishment” with no place in a democracy.

Amnesty International has also raised concerns over increasing human rights violations and repression in Jammu and Kashmir.
