Youm-e-Istehsal Became a Day of Embarrassment for Modi Govt: KMS

ISLAMABAD: Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and around the world observed Youm-e-Istehsal (Exploitation Day) as a Black Day on August 5 to protest India’s 2019 decision to revoke the region’s special status, according to Kashmir Media Service (KMS).

KMS said demonstrations and solidarity events were held in several countries, while democratic groups in India also staged protests in support of the people of Kashmir. In New Delhi, opposition parties protested outside Parliament, demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and constitutional rights.

Authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel across the occupied territory to prevent protests. Despite strict security measures, many Kashmiris came out onto the streets and observed a complete shutdown on the call of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said August 5 remains a painful reminder of the loss of the rights and identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He added that despite hardships, Kashmiris remain determined to protect their identity and fundamental rights.

Leaders of the National Conference held protests from Anantnag to Udhampur, while Mehbooba Mufti led a torchlight protest and sit-in in Srinagar. Protesters also demanded the immediate release of all Kashmiri political prisoners.

Political analysts said the Modi government has failed to break the resolve of the Kashmiri people despite years of restrictions. They argued that claims of “normalcy” in the occupied territory are no longer convincing.

According to KMS, analysts also highlighted the economic impact of Indian policies, claiming trade losses have crossed Rs1.5 trillion, nearly 496,000 people have lost jobs, and unemployment has risen above 25 percent. They said the handicraft and tourism sectors have been badly affected.

KMS further claimed that around 2.5 million non-local voters were registered to alter the region’s demographic balance, while nearly 700,000 Indian security personnel continue to enforce laws such as AFSPA and PSA.

KMS maintained that changes in demographics or military measures cannot legalise India’s control over Jammu and Kashmir, adding that the people of the occupied territory continue to resist despite ongoing restrictions and repression.
