Iran Urges Caspian States to Condemn Israeli, Ukrainian Actions

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi has called on all Caspian Sea coastal states to explicitly condemn what he described as recent aggressive actions by Israel and Ukraine in the region. In a message marking Caspian Sea Day, Gharibabadi, who also serves as Iran’s special representative for Caspian Sea affairs, stressed the need to uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity, while highlighting the importance of the 2006 Tehran Convention as a framework for cooperation among the five littoral states.

Gharibabadi warned that the Caspian Sea is facing serious environmental challenges, particularly a sharp decline in its water level, which is affecting ecosystems, ports, shipping and fisheries. He said the problem is linked not only to natural factors but also to climate change and human activity, calling for stronger institutional cooperation, joint scientific research and continuous data sharing among the coastal countries.

The Iranian official also condemned what he described as a missile attack by Israel and the United States on Anzali port facilities and a Ukrainian drone attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. He warned that such actions threaten regional stability and the strategic interests of all coastal states, stressing that the Caspian must remain a zone of peace, friendship and cooperation and urging regional solidarity against external provocations.
