JD Vance Says Iran Cannot Fully Block International Trade Routes

24 August, 2026 12:27

WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance has said that Iran does not have the capability to completely shut down international trade routes.

Speaking to US media, Vance said Washington has several options for dealing with Iran. However, he said the most effective approach would be to make Iran pay a price for disrupting oil and gas trade.

The US Vice President said Iran could not completely close international shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

His remarks came amid growing concerns over global trade and energy supplies due to rising tensions between Iran and the United States.

According to Vance, between 7 million and 15 million barrels of oil continue to pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day.

He said the primary objective of the US presence in the Middle East is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Vance added that Washington has several options for dealing with Iran and could also target its oil and gas trade as part of efforts to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and plays a major role in global energy supplies.

Amid the ongoing regional tensions, any major disruption to oil shipments through the waterway could have significant consequences for international energy markets.
