Report: 31 Former US Lawmakers, Staffers Joined Military-Industrial Complex

A new report by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists says 31 former US lawmakers and senior congressional staffers have joined the military-industrial complex as lobbyists or contractors over the past decade, highlighting potential ethical conflicts arising from the movement of officials between the public and private sectors.

The report provides what it describes as an “eye-opening glimpse” into links between two congressional committees and more than 100 defense contractors, consultants and lobbyists. Of the 31 former officials identified, 21 served on either the House or Senate Armed Services Committee, which plays a key role in shaping Pentagon policies through the annual National Defense Authorization Act.

The remaining 10 were senior committee staffers who moved into positions as government-relations officials or lobbyists for weapons manufacturers and defense companies. The report warned that such transitions can create potential conflicts of interest, particularly when officials who previously exercised political influence over defense policy move into highly compensated positions with military contractors.
