Iran-Oman Understanding on Hormuz Awaits US Commitments

A Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran Kazem Gharibabadi stated that an impermanent understanding between Oman and Iran on transportation through Strait of Hormuz will only move forward if the United States fulfills its commitments to Tehran.

Gharibabadi said Iran and Oman have agreed on arrangements related to the movement of vessels through the important waterway. However, he made it clear that the understanding will not automatically be put into practice. As per his statement, its implementation depends on Washington reinstating commitments that it had earlier deferred.

The idea was rejected by Iranian officials that Tehran should be the one to initiate toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said the United States was responsible for suspending its commitments and should therefore act first.

Gharibabadi added that Iran has already explained what steps Washington needs to take. According to him, once the requisite disorders are met and the US fulfills its commitments, Iran will also be ready to take the necessary measures concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

The following comments come at a time when tensions between Iran and the US continue to keep the Strait of Hormuz in focus. A key route of global shipment Strait of Hormuz reopening remains important for international shipping and could also influence global energy markets.
