BRICS Urged to End Silence and Challenge Washington’s Military Actions Against Iran

The deadly images from Sirik in southern Iran, where a US airstrike reportedly hit a civilian wedding ceremony, should be a serious warning to the Global South.

The deaths of innocent civilians, including a four-year-old child, cannot simply be described as “collateral damage”. Such incidents raise serious concerns about international humanitarian law and require strong condemnation.

For South Africa, a country known for its support for human rights and opposition to imperialism, remaining silent is not an option, according to the argument presented.

The incident also puts pressure on the BRICS alliance to take a stronger position against what is described as unilateral US military action.

BRICS should move beyond economic cooperation and take a united position on issues involving international law, sovereignty and civilian protection.

The United States has long spoken about the importance of international law, but critics argue that Washington has applied these principles differently depending on its geopolitical interests.

The strikes in southern Iran, which Washington described as strategic deterrence, have instead raised questions about state sovereignty and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Critics also point to what they describe as a double standard in US policy. Washington provides diplomatic and military support to Israel while also using military force against countries and groups that oppose its regional policies.

This has further strengthened criticism of the so-called “rules-based international order.”

South Africa has gained international attention for its position at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Pretoria’s genocide case against Israel has presented the Global South as a strong supporter of international legal principles.

However, supporters of stronger international accountability argue that these principles must apply equally to all countries, including major military powers.

The protection of civilians, the rejection of collective punishment and respect for humanitarian law should remain universal principles.

BRICS was created not only to increase economic cooperation but also to support a more balanced global system. Its members include countries with different interests and relationships with the United States, but the group has often supported greater respect for national sovereignty and multilateralism.

The latest incident has therefore raised calls for BRICS countries to take a collective position against unilateral military action.

BRICS could issue a joint statement condemning attacks that threaten civilians and call for investigations and accountability through the United Nations.

The Sirik incident has also renewed concerns about the effectiveness of the current global security system in protecting civilians during conflicts.

BRICS countries now face a choice over how strongly they want to respond to such incidents. Supporters of a stronger BRICS role say the bloc should act according to its stated commitment to a more balanced and rules-based international system.

The debate is not only about geopolitics but also about the protection of civilian lives and respect for international law.
