PMD Forecasts Fresh Monsoon Spell Across Upper Pakistan From Sept 12 to 17

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday forecast monsoon rains in the upper parts of the country from Saturday, with temperatures expected to fall during the forecast period.

“Monsoon currents are penetrating upper parts of the country,” the Met Office said in an advisory. It added that a westerly wave was likely to enter the upper parts of the country during the weekend and strengthen on September 14.

In Kashmir, rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected from September 12 to 17, with isolated hailstorms possible in several areas.

Rain, wind and thunderstorms are also expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock during the same period.

Several districts of Punjab, including Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan, are also expected to receive rain from the evening of September 12 until September 17.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rainfall is expected in Peshawar, Swat, Dir, Chitral, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and other areas from September 12 to 17.

Rain, strong winds and thunderstorms, along with isolated heavy rainfall, are also expected in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan during the forecast period.

In Sindh, most areas are expected to remain hot and humid. However, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Umarkot, Thatta, Badin, Karachi and surrounding areas may receive rain and thunderstorms from September 13 to 16.

Most parts of Balochistan are also expected to remain hot and humid, while Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel and nearby areas may receive rainfall from September 13 to 16.

The PMD warned that heavy rains could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Lahore from September 14 to 17.

The department also warned of possible flash floods in local streams and nullahs in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Landslides may also occur in hilly areas of KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir.

The weather department advised tourists and travellers to remain cautious and urged farmers to plan their crop activities according to the weather conditions.

PMD said temperatures are likely to drop during the forecast period.
