Pakistan Appoints First Ambassador to Armenia as Diplomatic Ties Begin

Pakistan has made its first ambassadorial-level appointment to Armenia since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2025.

Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan presented his Letters of Credence to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan during a ceremony at the presidential palace in Yerevan.

Ambassador Khan is also Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and serves as the non-resident ambassador to Armenia.

Pakistan and Armenia formally established diplomatic relations in August last year. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the signing of the joint communiqué at the time.

Dar said he and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan “reaffirmed our commitment to the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, and agreed to work together to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, including economy, education, culture, and tourism.”

President Khachaturyan congratulated Ambassador Khan on his appointment and expressed his support for stronger Armenia-Pakistan relations.

Ambassador Khan conveyed the greetings of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the Armenian president and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

The two sides discussed ways to expand cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture, tourism and people-to-people contacts.

Ambassador Khan also met Armenia’s foreign minister and Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan. They reviewed bilateral relations, discussed further cooperation and exchanged views on regional and international issues.

Safaryan said the establishment of diplomatic relations was an important policy decision by the leadership of both countries.

The meetings in Yerevan highlighted Pakistan and Armenia’s commitment to developing closer bilateral relations and finding new areas of cooperation.
