Pakistan Calls for Stronger UN Response to Growing Terrorist Threat

Pakistan has urged the UN Security Council for a stronger global response to terrorism and strengthen counterterrorism processes and repair gaps in its current sanctions regime.

Addressing the Security Council on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, honoured the victims, including seven Pakistani nationals. He extended his solidarity to the US government and people.

The ambassador pointed about the Security Council’s actions following the 9/11 attacks, containing the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 1373, which is still an significant part of the UN’s global counterterrorism outline. He admired Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism, with its counterterrorism operations, intelligence sharing and security cooperation with other countries.

According to Asim Iftikhar, Pakistan has made major sacrifices in the fight against terrorism withmore than 90,000 people, including civilians and security personnel, killed in attacks since the start of the century. He also pointed to the country’s economic losses.

He prominent that terrorist threats have altered noticeably over the past 25 years, as extremist groups gradually use present technology for propaganda, conscription, communication and financing. He also show concern over terrorism in Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan and the rising threat of far-right extremism.

The Pakistani representative stated specific distress over terrorism from Afghanistan, saying more than 4,700 Pakistanis had been killed in terrorist attacks over the past three years. He advised real action against groups including TTP, BLA, ETIM and Daesh.

Asim Iftikhar also notified about the use of the dark web, cybernetic resources and cryptocurrencies to finance extremism. He called for sturdier international collaborations, better sanctions mechanisms and balanced operation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

He insisted the Security Council to confirm agents are brought to justice and strengthen global and regional coordination to create a united response to the evolving terrorist threat.
