India’s Educated Youth Struggle for Jobs Amid Growing Unemployment Crisis

NEW DELHI: India’s educated young population is facing growing difficulties in finding suitable employment, with rising unemployment raising fresh questions about the country’s economic performance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The employment challenge is particularly visible among young people with university and technical qualifications, many of whom are struggling to secure jobs despite completing years of education and training.

According to a BBC report, job seeker Abhi Gupta has remained unemployed despite attending dozens of interviews.

Gupta said he spends almost his entire day looking for work, going from one opportunity to another without securing a suitable position.

Technical Graduates Face Tough Job Market

Gupta said that even after completing a three-year technical degree, finding appropriate employment had become increasingly difficult.

He also warned that prolonged gaps in employment can reduce the practical value of a qualification, particularly in rapidly changing sectors such as technology.

According to Gupta, remaining outside the technology sector for an extended period can make it harder for graduates to demonstrate that their skills remain current and relevant to employers.

The situation highlights a wider challenge for India’s growing educated workforce, where the number of graduates entering the job market continues to increase while suitable formal employment opportunities remain limited.

Economic Pressure Affects Workers’ Dignity

Labour economist Rosa Abraham has also highlighted the wider social consequences of inadequate employment opportunities.

According to Abraham, work undertaken primarily because of financial pressure can undermine a person’s sense of dignity, purpose and control over their life.

The comments reflect concerns that unemployment and underemployment are not merely economic problems but can also affect young people’s confidence, career development and long-term prospects.

Questions Over India’s Economic Model

The difficulties faced by educated job seekers have fuelled debate over whether India’s economic growth is generating enough high-quality employment for its expanding working-age population.

Critics of the Modi government argue that strong headline growth figures have not necessarily translated into sufficient opportunities for young graduates.

The challenge is particularly significant for India’s technology sector, where employers often seek up-to-date skills and practical experience, leaving graduates vulnerable when they remain unemployed for extended periods.
