Pakistan Taking Additional Responsibility Under Makkah Agreement: Asim Iftikhar

NEW YORK: Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has said Pakistan is taking on additional responsibility under the Makkah Agreement as the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate.

Speaking in New York, Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan was actively contributing to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict and promoting a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations.

He said Pakistan’s immediate objective was to support a ceasefire, reduce tensions and bring the parties back to the negotiating table.

Pakistan Calls for Dialogue

The Foreign Secretary said the UN Charter provides for international disputes to be addressed through dialogue and peaceful means rather than war.

He said Pakistan recognised that the regional situation was moving in a negative direction and believed it had a responsibility to play a constructive role in efforts to prevent further escalation.

“All three countries are part of the Makkah Agreement and Pakistan is taking on additional responsibility under the accord,” he said.

Asim Iftikhar added that Pakistan’s objective was to promote peace and stability across the region.

Islamabad Engages on Iran-US Conflict

He said the international community had been closely watching developments in the Iran-US conflict and noted that Pakistan was among the countries involved in diplomatic efforts concerning the crisis.

Pakistan has continued to advocate dialogue and de-escalation while engaging with regional and international partners in an effort to help reduce tensions.

The Foreign Secretary said Islamabad would continue supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing the conflict from expanding further.

Palestine and Kashmir Must Follow UN Resolutions

Asim Iftikhar also said the conflicts in Palestine and Kashmir should be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

He rejected the suggestion that the United Nations was no longer playing a role in promoting international peace and said the UN framework remained essential for resolving major international disputes.

Pakistan’s latest diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, with Islamabad seeking to use its commitments under the Makkah Agreement to support dialogue, de-escalation and regional stability.
