Pakistan and China Operationalize Boundary Joint Commission

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have operationalized the Pakistan-China Boundary Joint Commission, marking a new step in bilateral cooperation on border management, trade and cross-border connectivity.

The inaugural meeting of the commission was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad and was co-chaired by Li Ya, Deputy Director General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bilal Mahmood Chaudhary, Director General (China) at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The newly operational commission is expected to provide a platform for closer coordination on border management and joint border surveys.

The mechanism will also facilitate discussions on issues related to border infrastructure and coordination between the two countries.

The commission is also aimed at supporting smoother trade flows and people-to-people connectivity between Pakistan and China.

Closer coordination on border-related matters could help facilitate movement across designated crossings and support expanding commercial and social links between communities on both sides.

The establishment of the commission represents another institutional mechanism for strengthening practical cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan and China have maintained close diplomatic and economic relations, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, trade, connectivity and regional development.

The operationalization of the Boundary Joint Commission provides a dedicated forum for addressing border-related matters and exploring opportunities for greater coordination.

The inaugural meeting marks the beginning of the commission’s formal work and sets the stage for continued engagement between Islamabad and Beijing on border management, trade and cross-border connectivity.
